What is the Push & Pull of Urban Design? Urban design is a complicated, multidisciplinary process of managing and shaping cities. Without urban design, our cities would lack order. Without order, our cities would be chaos. As such, urban design maintains balance between: site: the land and its existing conditions; structure: how we want to divide that land into parcels; and use: what will sprawl out from those parcels at any given time—whether it’s a warehouse or a parkland. The push-and-pull relationship between these elements in urban design ensures that every city maintains an equilibrium in space, time, function, form and hierarchy. Urban design is not simply about the processes of creating plans. It’s about determining where homes, businesses, or other buildings will be built within a city or surrounding community; what kinds of materials will be used for those buildings; how they’re originally designed; and what kinds of activities, events, and other interactive systems will take place in them at any given time. An urban designer adds to the prosperity of a city by formulating solutions that provide anything from parking lots to pathways. The push-and-pull relationship isn’t just about good intentions for development. It’s about convenience, comfort, safety and satisfaction for residents or tourists who use these facilities. Urban design is a complete package of solutions to a city’s needs. And urban designers strive to determine the urban metabolism—the way that a city grows and changes at any given time. Urban design must also have a communal stake in maintaining the city’s health. In other words, good urban design must ensure that our cities’ needs are being met by both health-care providers and the larger community. Urban designers work to optimize access to healthcare, education or other services. Urban design can help maintain or improve access to jobs, transportation options, housing resources, recreational resources and cultural resources for residents within an area. Urban design also aims to ensure that necessary natural and environmental elements, such as trees, green spaces, amenities and amenities are maintained within cities. Urban design seeks to balance the economic and social needs of the greater community. It must actively seek ways for citizens to advance in their personal or professional lives as well as for the city as a whole. Urban design professionals must be able to assess how available services and technologies can help meet those needs. Urban designers think about how it’s possible to transform any given region into an attractive place for both local residents and visitors from around the world. Urban design considers the community’s environment and resources, as well as social and political factors. Urban design is a process that makes sure that a city is a comfortable place to live in—one that provides adequate resources for the community to thrive. Urban design helps to ensure sustainability, because it’s about building sustainable communities through many different methods. Urban designers look at how people can get around, where they can get services, how citizens can get involved with their cities and what makes them happy. What does an urban designer do all day? Many urban designers work in offices or at home consulting on projects that could affect a city or neighborhood. Others have large roles in planning or construction projects. cfa1e77820
